About the piece

The Rational Desk (2022) is one of the projects in my Master’s Thesis. It was a medium to explore the possibilities of parametric design and digital fabrication. It was an exercise to engage with a design approach and creative methods more related to industrial design rather than the ones of crafts.

I conceived the desk as a counterpoint to the ∞ chair. The creation of this piece comes from a deliberately rational approach—while the chair came out from a highly experiential and sensory, real-time design process. The aim was to observe myself, my design methods, and my mindset, throughout a design experience in which the role I played was predominantly the one of the designer rather than the craftsman. The design event elapsed entirely in front of a screen instead of in the shop, and the outcome was shaped more by the technology I used than by my handicraft skills.
